The Scioto Valley Presbytery is living into Christ’s call to be a light to the nations by welcoming immigrants and refugees into our congregations. Through the vision of 1001 New Worshiping Communities, we are discovering new ways to embody the gospel in multicultural contexts.

One powerful testimony is the story of Sonita Amah and her daughter Rena, who fled Cameroun through Nigeria before arriving in Columbus Ohio. Life was heavy with challenges Sonita’s asylum status was uncertain, she had no car, her daughter could not attend school, and she struggled to find work.
Through the multicultural initiative at Worthington Presbyterian Church, Sonita found more than assistance she found family. Members offered transportation, encouragement, and support for Rena’s education. One faithful member, John, a retired tax attorney, guided her through the complex immigration process, even accompanying her to court. Alongside this practical help, Pastor Peter Okyere walked with Sonita in prayer, offering God’s Word of assurance and reminding her that Christ himself was her refuge and strength.
Through the Presbytery’s initiative, Sonita and Rena were granted a five‑year stay, enabling Sonita to receive a work permit and allowing Rena to attend school. The Presbytery continues to stand with them, offering ongoing support as Sonita navigates immigration court issues.
Their journey was lifted up during the “Light to the Nations” worship service for refugees and immigrants, where voices from many nations joined together, proclaiming that Christ’s church is a home for all people.
This is our testimony: strangers becoming family, and the gospel lived out in hospitality.
Closing Reflection
This story calls us to remember that the church is not defined by walls or programs, but by the welcome we extend. Sonita’s journey shows us that when we open our doors, when we share our gifts, when we pray with those in need, we become a light to the nations.
The prophet Isaiah says: “I will make you a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth”(Isaiah 49:6). Those light shines here in Worthington, through the lives of refugees and immigrants, through the faithfulness of members like John, and through the prayers we lift together.
May we continue to be that light. May we continue to welcome the stranger. And may we continue to live as witnesses of Christ’s love in action.
