Critics of Christian nationalism (CN) often portray it as a heretical departure from genuine Christianity. Books like American Heresy and American Idolatry suggest that orthodoxy is exclusively on the side of those opposing CN. But the full picture tells a rather different story. In this presentation, David W. Congdon examines the theology of CN, looking at the way they draw, in often traditional ways, on the Bible and classic Christian doctrines and practices.
Congdon examines four key features of CN theology. First, CN's doctrine of revelation—and its corresponding understanding of the Bible—continues a long Christian tradition of seeing the Christian church as part of a sacred history beginning with Israel and concluding with the kingdom of God. This sacred history is immune to external verification or critique, thus lending itself to supersessionism, Christian supremacy, and conspiratorial thinking.
