The Self-Development of People Committee (SDOP) and the Synod of the Covenant would like to establish partnerships with groups in our jurisdiction who:
- are oppressed by poverty or social systems
- want to take charge of their own lives
- have organized or are organizing to do something about their own conditions
- have decided that what they are going to do will produce long term changes for their lives or communities
- will control the programs they own and will benefit from them directly
Partnerships are initiated by applications to the Self-Development of People committee and are evaluated against the SDOP’s funding criteria.
Self Development of People was established by action of the 182nd General Assembly of the former United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. in 1970. Its funding comes from 32% of contributions to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering along with Presbyterian Hunger Program (36%) and Presbyterian Disaster Relief (32%).
There are three fundamental concepts the committee considers when reviewing a project: (1) people acting for themselves and being in control of their own actions, (2) need, coupled with (3) the potential for self-realization. Some of the programs SDOP has partnered with are:
- Appalachian Peoples Action Coalition (Presbytery of Scioto Valley)
- Hard Times Café (Presbytery of Mackinac)
- Micro Business Advisory (Presbytery of Miami)
If you have a group or project you think could benefit from SDOP, you are invited to apply using an application below. The deadline for application is October 30, 2007.
