By-Laws
A. Membership
The Committee on Justice for Women shall consist of the following:
- A moderator or co-moderators recommended by Justice for Women to the Synod Nominating Committee, which nominates these persons to the Synod Assembly for election to serve a three-year term
- A member from each presbytery recommended by the Committee on Justice for Women to the Synod Nominating Committee and nominated by the Synod Nominating Committee to the Synod Assembly for election to serve a three-year term; these members shall be divided into three classes with each class being as nearly equal in number as possible
- One representative from the Cabinet on Ethnic Church Affairs, chosen by the Cabinet, who will be a person from a racial ethnic group
- One representative from Presbytery Women in the Synod chosen by Presbyterian Women
- Three members-at-large with special expertise or knowledge in Justice for Women matters recommended by the Committee on Justice for Women to the Synod Nominating Committee and nominated by that Committee to the Synod Assembly for election; the members-at-large shall be divided into three classes and each member-at-large shall serve a three-year term
B. Responsibilities
The Committee on Justice for Women shall
- Act as a prophetic resource to the Synod, serving as an advocate for women's issues
- Interpret and advocate programs and issues within the total life and ministry of the Synod that significantly affect women; and advocate new or altered programs or relationships wherever necessary
- Serve as an educational resource on women's issues and develop strategies for action as needed
- Create and maintain a connectional system to foster and support the formation of programs and events dealing with justice issues for women in the presbyteries
- Recommend to the Synod Nominating Committee for nomination to the Synod Assembly and election by the Assembly one member of the Justice for Women Committee to be the representative to the Synod Council
- Appoint a representative to serve as a member of the Cabinet on Ethnic Church Affairs and a representative to serve on the Board of Presbyterian Women in the Synod
- Keep the Council informed of the work of the committee
